Anoche asistimos a una gran apuesta cultural en Sevilla. Una magnífica exposición en el que fuera antiguo convento de Santa Clara. 17 Santas de Zurbarán provenientes de colecciones y museos nacionales e internacionales junto a los diseños realizados ex profeso para esta exposición por destacados diseñadores y también el que hiciese en su día Balenciaga.
Una espléndida iniciativa que ha culminado con una exposición de cuadros del genial pintor del Barroco Zurbarán. Enhorabuena a los organizadores, con Benito Navarrete a la cabeza, al Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Sevilla, a Maria del Mar Sánchez Estrella y al resto de los miembros involucrados del Ayuntamiento de Sevilla y a su Alcalde ( que por cierto aguantó de pié estoico hasta tarde dando ejemplo de fortaleza y sentido del deber a pesar de tener un doloroso pinzamiento en la pierna) a los diseñadores participantes , al equipo de artistas colaboradores y como no, al patrocinador de evento, el BBVA, y en concreto a Luis Odriozola, Director Comercial Territorial del Sur del BBVA, y también a ABC.
Se ha mostrado una mirada diferente al mostrar las obras paralelamente junto a interpretaciones actuales de la mano de artistas de la aguja y el dedal. Elegancia y Creatividad de la mano de diseñadores como Elio Berhayer, Victorio & Lucchino (con un original y bellísimo diseño), Ághata Ruiz de la Prada, Juan Duyos, Roberto Torretta, Devota & Lomba, Angel Schlesser, Francis Montesinos, Ana Locking, Pedro Moreno, Hannibal Laguna o Rafael
Es una representación de Santas como si fueran aristócratas o reinas, sin ningún atisbo de dolor o rastro de sangre. Están pintadas de un modo singular, siendo una de sus originalidades el mostrarlas así, y con sus atributos correspondientes pero elegantemente vestidas, con ropajes ricos y suntuosos, anacrónicos a veces e imposibles pliegues en otros en un intento por mostrar algo diferente. Una interesantísima exposición con obras donde podemos analizar detalles del artista o del taller en cuadros expuestos cerca, como son las dos representaciones de Santa Maina, donde se aprecian distintas calidades pictóricas en los rostros de los dos cuadros de Santa Marína, del los que al del Museo de Sevilla se le supone la hizo el taller y al que se encuentra en el Thyssen Bornemissa la tocó el mismo pintor extremeño.
Interesante ver las distintas interpretaciones de Santa Catalina, la interpretación de Santa Dorotea portando unas manzanas atribuidas éstas a la mano de Zurbarán, impresionante la belleza del cuadro de Santa Isabel de Portugal que se encuentra en el Museo del Prado habitualmente, la distinción de Santa Ursula con su historia de «osos», enamoramiento, piedad y tragedia de manos de los Unos, o la anodina representación de perfil ( y sin mirar al expectador) de una de las Santa Catalinas de Alejandría (Colección Masaeu). Todas y cada una de las pinturas son impresionantes. Impresionan por el modo y momento en el que se crearon. Hay gran profusion de detalles, calidades de los ropajes, el diseño de estos, el dramatismo de la iluminación, la composición, el simbolismo inherente y el modo armónico y placentero » devoción y persuasión» con el que invitan a seguir su camino . No en vano se encontraron durante muchos años expuestas para consolar y animar a los enfermos.
La exposición de la obra de Balenciaga preside la entrada del espacio en la sala en planta baja, donde se muestran las 17 obras. En el piso superior están todos los diseños de los diseñadores, Diseños muy variados desde el refinamiento y la sofisticación creativa de Victorio & Lucchino que se inspiraron en Santa Isabel de Turingia, hasta la espectacularidad de Elio Berhayer con paños estructurados, flores y larga cola/capa. Todos los diseños tenían una historia interesante que contar; La recreación de Duyos, me impresionó por lo acertada y actual transmitiendo la espiritualidad con el uso del material y el color azul pálido. Por un lado el diseño sigue la gama colorista de su modelo y por otro transmite lo etereo. Anoche se encontraba junto Modesto Lomba a quién también di la enhorabuena por su diseño minimal tipo tie-dye inspirado en Santa Ursula. Ágatha rompedora y colorista, innovaba con un tejido plástico, con el cual se recreó una de las escenas más impactantes que se vieron en el espectaculo previo a cargo de la Compañía Eva La Yerbabuena. Todos eran especiales y teneis que verlos en esta dignísima exposición que sin duda recorrerá el mundo en el futuro dejando el listón cultural de la cuidad muy alto.
Es interesante además resaltar los diseños de destacados alumnos de Berhayer como Maria José Pedrosa, Mónica Ruiz, Tan Gram, Ana Castilla, Cristina Vázquez, José Jimenez y el imaginativo diseño del cordobés Rafael Pérez Girón. Por último deciros que en la planta baja, al otro lado del claustro y camino a la zona que se usará de taller didáctico, se encuentra una exposición»Homenaje a Zurbarán» realizada por la artista francesa Charlotte Massip.

Last night we attended a wonderful exhibition in the former ancient convent of Santa Clara. 17 Zurbarán´s Saints paintings from different private collections and museums from in and out of Spain, together with esigns made expressly for this exhibition by leading fashion designers.
A splendid initiative culminated in an exhibition of paintings by the great Baroque painter Zurbarán. Congratulations to the organizers, to Benito Navarrete, to the Institute of Culture and Arts of Seville, to Maria del Mar Sánchez Estrella and to the rest of the staff from Seville City Council and to the Mayor Juan Ignacio Zoido, to the participating designers, the team of collaborating artists and of course, to the event sponsor, BBVA, and specifically to Luis Odriozola Surdel Territorial Sales Manager BBVA, and to ABC.
It has shown a different approach to show the works in parallel with current interpretations by fashion designers. Elegance and Creativity in the interpretations as in Elio Berhayer creation, Victorio & Lucchino (with an original and extremely beautiful design), Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Juan Duyos, Roberto Torretta, Devota & Lomba, Angel Schlesser, Francis Montesinos, Ana Locking, Pedro Moreno, Hannibal Laguna and Rafael Pérez Girón among others.
Zurbarán Santas were painted represented as distinguised aristocrats or queens, without any hint of pain or blood trail. They are painted in a unique way, in an original approach, as they show them, holding their corresponding martyr attributes but are elegantly dressed, in rich and sumptuous robes, sometimes anachronistic or with impossible folds, in an attempt to show something different. An interesting exhibition of works where we can observe painting details by the artist himself or by his studio in many of the exhibited paintings exhibited paintings. For example in the two representations of Santa Maina, where there are different pictorical qualities show in the faces of the two paintings of St. Marina, of which the one at the Museum of Seville is supposedly made by the artist workshop, and the other from the Thyssen Bornemissa was painted by the hand of Zurbarán himself.
Interesting to see the various interpretations of Santa Catalina, Santa Dorotea portrait holding some apples (attributed to the hand of Zurbarán too) the stunning beauty of the painting of St. Elizabeth of Portugal which is normally shown in the Museo del Prado, the distinction of Santa Ursula with her story on «bears», falling in love, pity and tragedy at the hands of Atila and the Unos, or the peculiar representation of profile (without looking at the spectator) of one of the St. Catherines of Alexandria (Collection Masaeu). Each and every one of the paintings are breathtaking. It is interesting to think how striking they must have been at the time these were created regarding concept mastery and skill. There is a great profusion of detail, and great skill is also showed for the various tissues textures, as well as the robes designs. Impressive for the elegance, te distinctive atitude, the dramatic lighting and composition, its symbolism and how harmonious and pleasant they look «devotion and persuasion» to inviting us all to follow their path. These saints paintings had been kept for many years in a hospital to comfort and cheer the sick.
The work of Balenciaga is at the entrance to the ground floor space, which holds the 17 Saints works by Zurbarán. On the top floor are set all the fashion designs. These vary from the refinement and creative sophistication in Vicrorio & Lucchino´s work (who were inspired by St. Elizabeth of Thuringia) to the impressive design by Elio Benhaher with structured cloths, flowers and a long cover-tail. All designs had an interesting story to tell; Duyos interpretation was ethereal, actual and simple, transmitting spirituality with the use of material and the pale blue-grey colour, similar to the one in the painting. I greeted Modesto Lomba too for his minimal design in a tie-dye style inspired in Saint Ursula. Designer Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada , always innovating, presented a robe with a colorful plastic woven skirt, which was used by one of rhe dancers in one of the most shocking scenes that could be seen in Eva La Yerbabuena Company´s previous show. All designs were special and I encourage you to see this worthy exhibition that will no doubt circle the world and will spread Spanish, Andalusian and Sevillian cultute further more.
It is also interesting to point out both the engravings by french artist Charlotte Massip «Homage to Zurbrán» in the groung froor too, and the participation of outstanding Berhayer´s students as María Jose Pedrosa, Monica Ruiz, Tan Gram, Ana Castilla, Cristina Vázquez, Jose Jiménez and the imaginative design by Córdoba´s designer Rafael Pérez Girón.
