The Kingdom of Heaven rolling at Palacio de Portocarrero

EL RODAJE DE  «EL REINO DE LOS CIELOS»

ENEL PALACIO DE PORTOCARRERO. Febrero 2004

Parte del rodaje de la película “El Reino de los Cielos”,  tuvo lugar en el Palacio de Portocarrero (Fundación Enrique Moreno de la Cova). En principio, tenían previsto rodar en la Mezquita de Córdoba, en el Alcázar de Jerez, en la Casa de Pilatos y en el Alcázar de Sevilla. El equipo de Ridley Scott venía de rodar en el Castillo de Loarre y se dirigían ya al sur de España. Al no ser autorizados a rodar en el interior de la Mezquita de Córdoba, y tras llegar  su poder alguna foto del palacio, con sus patios y sus jardines amurallados, decidieron inmediatamente rodar allí. Descartaron entonces el rodaje en el Alcázar de Jerez, al resultarles más conveniente filmar en el de Portocarrero. Tras todo un mes de preparativos por parte del equipo artístico de la película, y tras montar un campamento durante el rodaje de más de 400 personas, filmaron durante una semana. Al rodaje asistieron SAR la Infanta  Dña Elena, el duque de Lugo y sus hijos, y el duque de Huéscar  entre otros.
El rodaje tuvo lugar en numerosas partes de la casa. En la plazoleta de entrada, rodaron una vez fue decorada a base de toldos de estilo medieval y  ambientada con puestos ambulantes, camellos y otros animales.
En el patio de apeadero o  de las palmeras se pintó de jabelga roja entonces. En él filmaron varias escenas, para lo que tuvieron que arrancar los setos de mirto y colocar plásticos, arena, plantas y tinajas. Tuvieron que construir una balaustrada de cartón piedra para la escalera principal y la decoraron a base de alfombras y cenefas de pintura mural decorativa. Quitaron además la reja de hierro de la entrada (para que Eva Greene pudiese entrar a caballo al galope), y la repusieron tras el rodaje.
En el salón de la batalla o salón verde ubicaron unas cuadras con caballos. Las herrerías se dispusieron en la primera planta del patio principal.  La escena de la muerte  escenificada por Liam Neeson, tuvo lugar en el ahora estudio de pintura de Cristina Ybarra. Otras escenas se rodaron tanto en la alberca del jardín, donde se colocó una pérgola de madera con cortinas de seda, como en el salón cuadrado y en salón rojo. En este último se colocó la cama con dosel que se encuentra actualmente en el dormitorio del Cardenal Portocarrero.

SINOPSIS

   Tiene lugar en el siglo XII. Trata sobre las Cruzadas. Godofredo de Ibelin, (interpretado por Liam Neeson), caballero respetado por el rey de Jerusalén y comprometido con el mantenimiento de la paz en Tierra Santa, emprende la búsqueda de su hijo ilegítimo Balian (Orlando Bloom), joven herrero francés que llora la pérdida de su mujer y su hijo. Godofredo convence a su hijo para que lo acompañe en su misión.

Tras la muerte de su padre, Balian hereda sus tierras y su título de caballero en Jerusalén, ciudad en la que cristianos, musulmanes y judíos han conseguido convivir pacíficamente durante la tregua entre la Segunda y la Tercera Cruzada.

Con una fidelidad inquebrantable, Balian sirve a su rey y, además, se enamora de la princesa Sibylla (Eva Green), la enigmática hermana del monarca.

Tras distintos acontecimientos, Balian termina descubriendo la corrupción de la clase eclesiástica, y la amenaza que sufre el Reino de Jerusalén por el ejército musulmán, liderado por Salah al-Din, y con esto se enfrentan a una guerra para obtener el poder de Jerusalén.

THE MAKING OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

Part of the filming of the movie «The Kingdom of Heaven», was held at the Palacio de Portocarrero ( Enrique Moreno de la Cova Trust).After Ridley Scott and his team rolled at Loarre Casttle, they headed south of Spain.

Initially, they had planned  to shoot in the Mosque of Cordoba, in the Alcazar of Jerez, in Casa de Pilatos and at the Sevillian Alcazar. Not being allowed to shoot inside the Mosque, and after reaching Ridley Scott possession, a picture of Palacio de Portocarrero, with its walled gardens and courtyards,they immediately decided to shoot there.

 They finally didn´t shoot at the Jerez Alcazar, as found more convenient to do so at Palacio de Portocarrero.

After a month of preparations by the film artistic team, and after setting up a camp while  shooting of more than 400 people, they rolled for a week. When shooting was taking place, HRH Princess Elena attended, together with the Duke of Lugo, their sons and the Duke of Huéscar among others.

Filming took place in many parts of the house. Firstly, at the entrance plaza,  once it was decorated with medieval tents and the crew had set a number of stalls, camels and other animals.

The Courtyard of the palms trees was painted  red then. Ridley Scott filmed several scenes in it. For doing so, he removed the myrtle hedges and place plastic sheets to cover the brick floor with sand,  adding plants and pots too. They had to build a cardboard balustrade to the main stairs and decorated the space using carpets and mural decorative friezes. The also removed the iron gate from the entrance (so Eva Greene could enter galloping on horseback). The iron gate was replaced back afterwards, and myrthles were planted again as well.
In the battle hall, or green hall, a few blocks with horses were located. Ironworks were placed on the first floor of the main courtyard. The death scene staged by Liam Neeson, took place in the current painting studio of Cristina Ybarra. Other scenes were shot both in the irrigation pool by the garden, where they placed a wooden pergola with silk curtains. Shooting also in both the red hall and the square hall. A four poster bed was placed in the red Hall. Ridley Scott left it as a present to the location owners. This bed is currently located in Cardinal Portocarrero´s bedroom.

SYNOPSIS

It takes place in the twelfth century. It’s about the Crusades. Godfrey of Ibelin (played by Liam Neeson), a knight respected by the king of Jerusalem, and committed to the maintenance of peace in the Holy Land, goes in search of his illegitimate son Balian (Orlando Bloom), a young French blacksmith who is mourning the loss of his wife and son. Geoffrey convinces his son to accompany him on his mission. After the death of his father, Balian inherits his land and his knighthood in Jerusalem, the city where Christians, Muslims and Jews have managed to coexist peacefully during the lull between the Second and Third Crusades. With an unwavering loyalty, Balian serves his King and also falls in love with the princess Sibylla (Eva Green), the enigmatic king’s sister. After various events, Balian ends up discovering the corruption of the ecclesiastical class, and the threat facing the Kingdom of Jerusalem by the Muslim army led by Salah al-Din, and with this face a war for power in Jerusalem.
